The purpose of this website is to help teachers plan for a 'Fun and Games' unit, with a focus on China. This unit attempts to connect students to the people of China as well expose and explore the various aspects of China and the Chinese culture through various games from China.


Details Of The Unit

Year Level
> grade 3 - 5

Learning Area
> Literacy, numeracy, interpersonal development, the Arts, the humanities, health & physical education.

Duration
> Six, fifty-minute sessions

Outcomes
> To experience games from another cultures
> To develop coordination through play
> To play as a team member
> To build deeper interpersonal relationships among the students
> To foster personal skills such as peace and conflict resolution
> Exposure to the Studies Of Asia (interaction & interdependence; images & perceptions; cultural heritage; inter-cultural communication)

Introduction To Nationalities

The video below serves as a terrific initial discussion that you may want to have with your class before introducing them to the Studies Of Asia and of China. The purpose of this pre-discussion is to encourage children to think about the importance behind the need for us to learn about our neighbouring countries. There is also a follow up activity on 'Nationalities' available for download just before the video.

Discussion Questions
Is there a difference between the words, 'nation' and 'country'? If so, what is the difference?
What does nationality mean? What nationality do you belong to?
What is culture? What is your background?
Do you think we are connected to Asia? If yes, how?
Is Australia part of Asia?
Which countries are closest to Australia? How much do you know about them?
Do you think we should learn about our neighbouring countries? Why or why not?
Are you able to discuss the various advantages or disadvantages of learning about China?
Why do you think we are learning about China and the Chinese culture?
Where is China? How much do you know about China?
